30 Days of Quilt Design Challenge

Rachel, at Stitched in Color, has teamed up with Gotham Quilts to host a quilt design challenge on Instagram called the 30 Days of Quilt Design Challenge. The challenge is to do some quilt designing for 30 days, obviously, but what I love about it is that it doesn't have to be 30 consecutive days. It's hard to do anything for 30 days straight, so it's nice to have the option to skip a few days here and there without feeling like I'm falling behind.

The challenge goes until October 31st so there's still plenty of time if you want to join in. You can read all about it in Rachel's introduction post.

So far I'm up to 14 days of designs and it has been a lot of fun! Here is a sample of my designs so far.

Apparently I forgot to colour the borders on this first one :) I like the asymmetrical setting, and I'd probably not bother to piece those parts on the sides that are outlined but not coloured. I think I'd quilt those lines to create ghost shapes.

I love this block and just look at all the negative space! Imagine all the fun flow quilting that could fill it up.

I wanted to play with scale a little for this one...and obviously I've been playing around with asymmetry a lot during this challenge :)

So, this next one would require 1,661 1" hexies. I'm actually having a hard time not just diving in to start this one right away! Never mind that I'm already working on an EPP project, which I expect will take me a long time to finish even if I don't start another EPP quilt. Still, this one is really calling my name.

Colouring it on the computer was much easier if I just used one shade for each section, but I definitely envision it being done scrappy. The more fabrics, the better!

My to-make list has been growing steadily these past few weeks, and I still have 16 days of designing to do!

There are many, many beautiful quilts being designed by others participating in the challenge, so if you're on IG I definitely recommend you check out the hashtag #30daysofquiltdesign.

  2. I've been watching your quilt designs on instagram and I plan to jump into this process once I get the cloud nine challenge out of the way.

  3. The challenge has been fun to follow along with on IG as people post. I like getting a bit more of the description of what you are thinking with the design here, though. Especially that first design - quilting out the unpieced parts as "ghost" blocks is a fantastic idea!
